Building Schools for Future, Sheffield

Sheffield Local Education Partnership (LEP)

As project Director working for BDP, Stephen designed and lead several 'Building Schools for Future' projects in Sheffield.

Forge Valley Community School: this new school responding to its beautiful wooded valley setting in Sheffield’s greenbelt.

The building is focused around a four-storey “heartspace” containing the school’s communal uses.  The distinctive northlight roof profile is used as a motif on the school's uniform and was highlighted when the project was selected as the winner of the Yorkshire Structural Engineering Excellence Award 2012.

High Storrs School: a 1930’s Grade II listed building was sensitively refurbished and extended.  The project was cited as an exemplar in English Heritage’s guide “Refurbishing Historic School Buildings”.

Birley Community College: A major extension of an existing secondary school, providing new accommodation for all main academic departments, new assembly hall and a sports centre.  New accommodation is wrapped around a retained building to form a courtyard. Teaching blocks are angled towards the view across Derbyshire countryside and and at the same time to creating top lit breakout learning spaces.

This compact building complies with the government's drive to reduce building cost whilst still providing an exciting and inspiring learning environment.
