What We Do
A design led architectural practice based in Sheffield. We offer a wealth of experience gained from designing many different types of projects from individual houses to university campus masterplans.
APPROACH
The practice’s approach is to place the user at the heart of the design process. We work closely with our clients to fully understand their needs and aspirations and to find the best solution to deliver these within budget. We are used to handling large complex design problems and have the proven skills in delivering award winning projects. We apply the same level of strategic thinking and fresh approach whatever the scale of the project
Our designs are sustainable and work in harmony with their surroundings and the climate. Our focus is always on users’ experience of the building; how its internal spaces work and feel and the relationship between interior environment through careful control of daylight and views. We provide buildings that work well and are pleasure to live with.
SERVICES
We are able to provide full architectural services from project inception through to completion of the project on site. We are well versed in different forms of procurement and able to tailor our services to suit the particular circumstances.
Feasibility Studies and Masterplans
We are very experienced in carrying out complex feasibility studies, working closely with clients and leading the briefing process. By facilitating multi stakeholder workshops and producing option studies we are able to develop a comprehensive project brief. We use simple computer generated massing models to help clients visualise how a project can be realised. These tools are invaluable in both testing a site’s capacity and negotiating with planning authorities to get the most favourable outcome for our clients. Using a combination of creativity and analytical skills we are able to unlock a site’s full potential.
We are experienced school designers. Over the past five years, Stephen has been acting as a Design Advisor for the Department of Education (DfE) for 30 school projects across the country. This has included primary, secondary and SEN schools. In this role he has provided advice in developing the school briefs, assisting in planning negotiations and reviewing design proposals in detail to ensure these meet the school and DfE requirements.
The practice has a wealth of experience in all types of university buildings including; lecture theatres, teaching spaces, specialist laboratories, sports facilities and social and informal study spaces. We are used to working closely with academic, estates and support staff to develop detailed project briefs and deliver projects. Most recently Stephen Hill Architects has designed and delivered projects for the University of York and York St John’s University.
