New House, Wickersley

 PROJECTS:  ALL

Stephen Hill Architects were commissioned to design a new private house on a site abutting the greenbelt in Wickersley, near Rotherham. Both the family house and conjoined flat are fully wheelchair accessible. The clients wanted a building sympathetic to its natural surroundings and with a clean contemporary design and open plan spaces.

Embedded into its sloping site the building has a barn-like form appropriate to its rural setting. It is designed to be very energy efficient with a highly insulated envelope and utilising low energy technologies. It is ventilated by a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system, has an air source heat pump and PV cells on its south facing roof.

The main habitable spaces are placed on the south side of the building with panoramic windows overlooking the open views across the valley. More highly serviced rooms occupy the north side of the building facing the owner’s livery yard.

Construction work is scheduled to start in spring 2020.
