Design Advisor: Schools in the East and West Midlands

 PROJECTS:  ALL

Education Funding Agency (EfA)

Stephen Hill was a design advisor for the Department for Education for batches of schools, across the Midlands, built under the initial Priority Buildings Schools Programme. This involved assisting the individual schools to develop the project brief in line with the Agency’s framework guidance.

Once the batches of schools were competitively tendered to the contractors on the framework, Stephen acted for the client reviewing the design aspects of contractor teams’ submissions. This required expertise in school design and the specific DfE guidance on school space standards and specifications. He then commented on the designs’ compliance and quality as projects were developed to completion.

The schools on which Stephen worked ranged from small primary refurbishments to large new secondary schools and SEN schools. Projects included;

  • Wilsthorpe: New build secondary school

  • Bemrose School, Derby: New build separate extension and phased refurbishment of locally listed 1930s school building

  • Bluecoat Academy, Aspley, Nottingham: New science and dining blocks

  • Cedars Academy, Leicestershire: New science block and refurbishment of kitchen, specialist teaching spaces and sports hall and changing

  • Iffley Academy, Oxford: Replacement special school

  • Colmers School & Sixth Form: New academic block
