Sports Science Facility
PROJECTS: ALL
York St John University
This project relocates York St. John University’s (YSJU) Sports Science department to its sports campus at Haxby Road. The University’s recently built sports building was arranged around courtyard occupied by temporary buildings. It was always anticipated that the courtyard would be infilled by new accommodation in the future.
The new Sports Science infill the courtyard this space to provide spaces for the detailed physiological monitoring of athletes along with teaching facilities. At the ground floor the two highly transparent sports science laboratories provide a showcase for the new facility. They are separated by a fully glazed folding partition allowing them to enable them operate as a single space. At the first floor the building accommodates a physiotherapy training room for 25 students along with seminar rooms and offices.
YSJU has ambitious energy reduction targets and the building’s envelope is designed to meet stringent performance standards . It has very high insulation standards, and an air tightness rating of 1m3/hr/m2 for the labs and 3m3/hr/m2 for the general building. Materials used seamlessly match the existing building so that it appears as a single entity. The highly glazed façade and rooflights are triple glazed, and provide good levels of daylight throughout this deep plan building.
The building was completed and has been in operation since summer 2019.
